Not dissimilar in size to Aberdeen, then. (We're hovering around the 200,000 mark...)

blimey its a bit obvious isn't it, surely most people know not to reply to unsolicited mail. It's no different to the post office sending junk mail that might be scams. I mean, I'm a mac newbie and I have been attracted to mac because of the suposed better security and user friendly way it works, but I'm still totally obsessive about making sure I keep an eye out for popups and stuff.
The one thing that unnerves me still about mac is that I feel I don't know enough about how it's actually put together so wouldn't know where to look if any weird stuff was on it.
Was going to ask about security actually. Trying to sort broadband access for a panther ibook and possibly later if can afford it (to replace clapped out family pc) leopard macbook. Anyone here use broadband without a wireless router? The only thing that puts me off going wireless is the way it works (ie-signal based). I know you can turn these things off when you're not using them but I just don't like the idea of a permanent signal being beamed round my house. I know it's probably low level, but still...
How come it doesn't interfere with other electrical appliances and mobile phone sigs do? (I'm thinking amps and stereos here)

just out of interest-are people who've had trouble with this email using Entourage for mac or something similar? I access my email via my ISP's website and their spam and virus filters tend to cut out all the usual rubbish you get, so I haven't had any probs for a long time. Just a tip.

"How come it doesn't interfere with other electrical appliances and mobile phone sigs do? (I'm thinking amps and stereos here)"
'Cos it uses a much, much weaker signal than a mobile 'phone does. It only has to be "heard" reliably from a distance of 20 or 30 meters; a mobile 'phone has to be "heard" five or six miles from its base tower. By the laws of "root mean squared" (don't ask me to explain just now) it means a 'phone can be* much, much more powerful than a wi-fi connection.
In general, there appear to be neglegable health implications to leaving your wi-fi on all the time compared to having a mobile 'phone on all the time in your house.
(*'Phones adjust their power up and down depending on how far away from the nearest tower they are...)

peet. It all makes much more sense now. anyone here got leopard yet btw? what's the overall feeling on it as a working system, any particular things to watch out for? I'm not gonna upgrade my ibook cos I've got old software that won't work with it, but in terms of a new system what do you think?

I've got Leopard but I'm not all that happy with it so far. I have a LOT of software compatibility problems (Epson printer drivers, Onyx, Toast, DivX, WMP, PanoramaMaker, etc.) which are ever so slowly being fixed. I have yet to make Time Machine work even though the external hard drive has in fact backed up my data. One thing that drives me mad is the fact that if you even look sideways at video while it's playing in YouTube it freezes Safari (ie if you try to shut it off or move the play cursor).
Other than that I'm happy.

Make sure you have the latest Flash and Adobe Reader plugins. I found that updating the plugins solved most of my Safari crashing problems. Adobe Reader was particularly bad - it would seem to work fine, but then crash maybe 15 minutes later when you did something like try to quit Safari - the only way I knew it was Adobe crashing was by looking at the crash logs.
I haven't tried Time Machine yet, but I will soon.

turvy (Fetch me my trousers Geoffrey...) Posted Jan 30, 2008
I've not had many problems - none with Safari and plugins so far.
I had to switch Time Machine off and only allow it to back up once per week by switching it on each Sunday and letting it do one backup. If left to it's own devices it was spending all it's time doing hourly backups, then daily and then weekly, taking up processor time and slowing everything down.
In general I'm happy with the upgrade but think that Apple could have made sure that it worked seamlessly before releasing it!

Time Machine doesn't slow me down, it just doesn't work. When I open the external drive I find that all the backups are there but when I open the actual software all I get is a pretty star field and the only thing I can look at is *right now*.
