Okay, I just really like socks. It was suggested to me (by Bossel) that this might make a companion piece to entry A583300, and that would please me greatly. (A nice entry to be connected with, after all.)

I'm sure you will find there are other uses which you might usefully include.
One nefarious use is to stuff it full of sand, or bits of iron and use it as a cosh!
You could stuff them full of tights (or similar) and use them as draught exluders.
I'm sure there are camping uses for them as well - I remember seeing a short BBC programme where they featured in Tips for Campers. You could hang things up that you didn't want creatures to get into. Might be worth checking out.

have you thought bout linking to the comming up why usful things always disapper and to the paranoia post by perigrin in the section about gnomes etc, that always nick your socks and stuff.
it would be nice to tie these together, of course, if you use your socks for shell collecting then you would never have a pair anyway

A cosh? I think that's what we in the States call a blackjack or a sucker-bag. Something to hit a person over the head with, yes?

Some other scout has beaten you to it Bossel, as the entry has been recommended. It's now on the ComingUp page. Unfortunately, the old 'this thread has been moved....' messages aren't coming up any more. A similar confusion happened with Gnomon's 'Old Irish Money' entry a few weeks back (the thead is at F81924?thread=161595).
