A joke I just heard on Jo Caulfield's new Radio4 show involved a competition at a Sci-Fi convention, where there are no winners and losers.

Just losers.

Is this sort of joke a form of unacceptable discrimination? She surely wouldn't make such a joke about any other minority, so why are us sci-fi fans fair game?

Mister Matty

It's a crap joke based on a hoary old stereotype. I think you'll survive it.

Having said what I did in post 3 and having listened to the programme on listen again, I can only say that that was the best gag during the whole half hour smiley - sadface

...I liked the home-cinema thing.
She doesn't seem to bother with funny-endings to her sketches though...they just sort of........

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

A light-hearted comment like that only becomes discrimiation when people take it too seriously and get offended by it.

True. But let's face it-she has a point-we are all a little geeky, us sci-fi fans (myself included).

It would seem that her joke was innacurate apart from anything else, if the replies here are anything to go by, self-assured, self-effacing, and ready to laugh at ourselves.

But what about those quieter fans, who might not be so confident? Shouldn't we be concerned for the less-confident people, who might be troubled by it?
