So, tomorrow in class, we're going to watch "An Inconvenient Truth." If you don't know that it was the documentary that Al Gore made about global climate change, you've been living under a rock for the past year.
Anyway, it comes out tonight at midnight, so Newbie Prof and I looked up the opening times of Circuit City and Best Buy so that we could get it when it first hits the shelves. The following conversation took place:
Me: "You know, you're going to be the only one in line waiting for this movie... people will be asking you if you're there for the Wii."
NP: "Yeah, it'll be me and Al Gore's mom!"
Try using that sentence again in polite conversation.

I take it this film is not going to be top of the hit list

Sheesh, why doesn't he get one of each? He could probably con the school into paying for the Wii if he claims it's a highly specialised HDTV compatible media device, with a pointing device incorperating advanced motion sensor technology, for playing the movie.

Excellent.
Today in the office, one of my colleagues said, perfectly reasonably "I can't! The inflatable man's in the way!"

"Who is 'Al Gore' and who is 'Wii' ?
A colleague proposed to call 'this black wire the black wire' . "

The Wii is the new Nintendo system out there- it actually looks kind of cool, because the controllers respond to motion rather than just button-mashing. So, if you were going to swing your sword to attack an enemy on the screen, you'd actually swing the sword and not press X or whatever.
Al Gore? You don't know Al Gore? Albatross Guy doesn't know Al Gore! Ah well.
Al Gore was Clinton's Vice President through both terms in office. He was actually the guy who really tried to push Kyoto through, though it didn't get ratified by the US Senate because they were a bunch of short sighted conservative poopyheads. *ahem* Since his election as President in 2000 which was subsequently stolen by BushCorp, he has been travelling the lecture circuit speaking about climate change. The film is the result of those lectures.
And if you didn't know my politics before, you do now.

I saw the film at the cinema. What I found interesting about the film was the insight it gave into who Al Gore is and why he is sincere in his beliefs.
A couple of things stop me from being excited by this film. One being that question of it's scope to reach beyond the converted, do you have to have already accepted that climate change is something to be concerned about to care to watch a film on the subject? The film appeared to be very much aimed at trying to gently and in positive way engage the American middle ground, the fence sitters, I wonder if an Al Gore vehicle can do that in such a partisan country?
I think it would be a good film to show school-kids.

Hi Scandrea,
I have not seen the film. I only heard an intervidew with Al Gore whilst he was visiting England.
Surely it is up to every parent to point out the danger of our way of life. I hope we all do it otherwise we shall become another "vanished" vcivilisation.
Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one.
Thank you for your kindess in remembering y brother.
Christiane.
