Kevin Eubanks and the instrumental parts of "Hotel California"

"Life is strange, lunchtime doubly so", said a fictional fellow once.

Or something like that.

The internet offers a strange sideways glance at personableness and semi-anonymousness at the same time.

Various famous people actually have their own websites, as opposed to fansites that they might visit. I don't mean a website that plugs the latest thing and has a few pictures. I mean a simple site that is actually a protrusion into cyberspace of the famous person's personality and tastes.

Shelly Berman
Brian Hodge
Pauley Perrette
and
Kevin Eubanks

What is a Kevin Eubanks?
It is a protrusion into this reality of a musical soul and a thinking person who also happens to play guitar.
Famous and appreciated for many things, his current job is as the musical personality and straight man on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Sometimes, given a choice between one of the two leaving the show, I would choose Jay. Kevin is cool.
His guitars are all handmade, with special features. He plays with his fingers and he seems very comfortable. As far from the previous holders of the chair, Skitch Henderson and Doc Severinson, as you could get. And a nice change from the "Which Way Did He Go, George?" goofiness of that fellow on the Letterman circus. Admittedly, Paul Shafer has a tremendous amount of talent and experience. He's also irritating in a way that makes you sure that SNL asked him to leave.

Of course, I am biased. G.E. Smith has prettier instruments than Paul.
And Kevin Eubanks has prettier guitars than G.E.

"Hotel California"
The song.
The only that comes closer in the guitar department is "Victim of Love", as far as Eagles songs go.

Now, you can say many things about the Eagles and I would probably agree with you. But, they gave us "Journey of the Sorcerer" and "Hotel California".

I have been known to tape just the stuff at the end and make fun of the lyrics, making my own parody called "Motel Indiana". The words are not exactly... "Hairway to Stephen", or even "The Accountancy Chanty"... But the Glenn Frey guitar work... and that duet at the end... Sorry, it's like some 10CC songs, like "I'm not in love" or "Second Sitting for the Last Supper", it doesn't go on long enough. To listen to "Hotel California" on the radio is to be stuck with the single version and the inevitable emotional dip with the next song... Unless it's "Children of the Sun"... Or "We're Making Plans for Nigel"!

"Life in the Fast Lane" doesn't really cut it. It is too discoey, just like the rest of the album, though, "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" has a certain cachet to it, like it was from an "Animal House" sequel...
