I've heard and read the phrase "Law of the Jungle" tossed around lightly as if anyone would know what it means.
Maybe popular parlance, in it's ignorance, has twisted the original meaning, as is the case with "The Ugly American".
Catchphrases often depend upon a certain level of ignorance. The willingness to try to be "in" often leads to an even greater outsider status if you don't know what you are talking about.
