I'll be spending a lot of time this week working on family photo albums - scanning things in, cropping and straightening, and correcting color. So if I'm not on h2g2 as much, don't worry, I'll be back soon. I want myself and my siblings to have good copies of all the photos in our family scrapbooks.

That's a worthwhile way to spend time. I should do something like that myself, one of these days.

I started doing the family tree, and found my cousin, the only one i have, who lives in america.
She sent me photo of my paternal grandma, and it was the first time anyone had ever seen her!!!
I have loved most of the photo's she has sent...and i started a scrapbook to pass on to the grandchildren.
I can "get lost" looking at old pictures,so catch ya when you emerge again

I was planning to do the same with some of my vacation photos from over the years. Unfortunately, I'll be darned if I can get my scanner to work with the new computer.
Good luck with the project- which I agree sounds like a worthwhile one. Those memories will mean a lot to you and your siblings.

Yes, definitely a worthwhile project. Not being morbid or anything, but all i have of my family is some old photos & i have examined them in minute detail many times.
It's really rather sad thinking i'm the "last of the line" so when i go, that's that, nobody to leave the photos to, it's as if the family never even actually existed.

JEllen, that's an excellent thing to do! I wish my own relatives would do this. I've done some of this, scanning pictures and printing them out and giving them to relatives. But there are many photos that other people have that I'd like to have copies of.
I come from a large extended family. My mother comes from a family of four and my dad from a family of five. All of my parents' siblings are still alive and all of them have children too. I would like to have more photos of my father's father and mother. My father's father died long before I was born, and my father's mother died when I was a bit more than two years old.
Terri, I'm sorry to hear about your family situation! The end of the line! My own extended family has always been very important to me, I'm on good terms with most of my cousins, nephews and so forth. My relatives live all over the country and there are even some of them in Australia and New Zealand.
I was recently a bit worried about my *own* prospects for carrying on the 'Van der Merwe' line. I am at the moment the only hope for the paternal branch that will keep the family name going. My father has two brothers, but the one has only daughters, and the other one has only one son, who is gay. So if I don't get together with someone and have children, there will be no further boys carrying on the family name from my grandfather. There will be many relatives, Claassens, Richardsons, Bekkers, Engelbrechts, Etsebeths, and so forth, going into the future but no further van der Merwes, of this particular branch of the van der Merwe lineage. This may seem silly to some of you but we're a rather conservative bunch here in South Africa, family and relations are very important to us.
