Ellen

Finally got to see the Margaret Bourke White photography exhibit today. It was amazing! She took the most beautiful pictures! Buildings and steel works and dams and factories don't sound that aesthetic, but her compositions made them look extraordinary. Because of her lighting, I am inclined to dub her the Vermeer of industrial photography. (Yes, I know Vermeer painted, but the exquisite lighting was comparable). Sorry, Ed they didn't have any postcards, but here's a link to a photo and description of the exhibit.

Oh, and she was the first photographer to appear on the cover of Life magazine!

smiley - cheerupJEllen, you're quite right when comparing her gift for making natural light into sublime photographic artistry to Vermeer's masterful gift of compositional excellence.

She had a unique gift of documenting the world history experienced through her eyes that haunted the mind's eye.

Like that picture of Ghandi spinning thread or the horrors at Buchenwald.
The pictures that she left are true treasures.smiley - rose

You lucky thing smiley - ok

She was brilliant. Best thing we can do to try to appreciate her stuff is to search Google Images with her name.

The comparison with Vermeer is very apt. smiley - ok

Hi JEllen!

I Googled her so I could see what you were talking about. I'm still not convinced I'll ever convert to being a photography "fan", but I can see what it is you appreciate about some of these photos.

And I am absolutely thrilled for you that you were able to see the exhibit. One thing I do know is how exciting it is to get to see the works of a favorite artist in person!

Hi Jaz'd! Long time no see- I was wondering about you (and too stupid-busy to leave you a proper message, how's that for me being a bad buddy!).

My Saturday's going nicely. I'm baking a pizza right now. I made the sauce with fresh garlic, onions, sun-dried tomatoes (and the oil is awesome for brushing the crust), chopped red chillies, baby spinach, and provolone and cheddar cheeses. I'll be eating it in about ten minutes more. smiley - drool

Other than that, there's not much going on around here, just typical Saturday afternoon laundry and lollygagging around. How's you?

Well I didn't get in touch with you on 1 of my intermittent visits...how's that for a bad buddy?

No my computer died on me just before Christmas. I picked up an e machines computer...to make a long story short, I now have a Functional e machines computer! But I was going through some Serious withdrawal for awhile. smiley - headhurts

But yeah it's great to be back.smiley - hug That pizza description had me smiley - drooling-sounds great. I'll be warming leftover curried rice & veggies(hmm, could you class cranberries as a veggie?) with a basa fillet. It turned out great, I used coconut cream with a bit of veg. stock as a sauce.

I usually use coconut cream/milk and veg. stock for curries, too. You have excellent taste. smiley - winkeye

The pizza was yummy. I only used two small red chillies, and the pizza sauce has some serious kick to it. Wish you lived a bit closer, I'd share some with you- it's so filling, we only managed one slice apiece and there's four left.

Sorry to hear your computer died, but I am glad you have a new one!! I think I'm going to be replacing mine, soon. Dell has a nice package which includes a DVD and CD burner (so no need to swap out the existing CD burner on this baby) and some software to put them to good use, a 17-inch flat screen monitor (I have a 15-inch flat screen my uncle gave me and I love it!), optic mouse, and complete MS Office suite for $912 plus tax and shipping. This computer is about ready to croak- it whistles when it's starting up, and it's moving r e a l l y s l o w l y these days. smiley - erm And I don't have a DVD drive on here at all.

You're not a bad buddy. Better intermittent than not at all! smiley - smiley

Oh Jazz, only you could curry a cranberry!!!smiley - hug welcome back!

I am drooling with envy JEllen at that expo. PC, until you have seen the original B/W prints you honestly can't get an idea of the beauty & power of some photography; hmm, try starting with Henri Cartier Bresson for people stuff "the decisive moment"; Ansel Adams for Zone theory of light measurement & startling American landscapes, Capa for documentary...oh gawd; too many to list.

I would advise anyone to try & get the Time Life books of photography via ebay or Amazon or whatever, i bought them 2nd hand 30 years back & it's what inspired me to get into photography.

Thanks Terri, it's great to be back!smiley - hugThe way things were dragging (& my subsequent state of mind) I was afraid that I'd be in a straitjacket by the time I got a computer. I didn't relish the thought of gripping a pencil in my mouth to tap...tap...tap away.

Cranberries or dried cranberries are a nice change frm raisins & they're definitely more colourful.

So how do you deal with these cranberries? Add them to the actual curry or serve them separately as a chutney thing?

Just add the dried cranberries half way through the cooking the same way you would use raisins in cooking. I suppose adding them earlier is optional too.

For the sake of familiarity PC, I was considering another Dell. Then when I noticed this loaded system I couldn't pass it up. It has both CD & DVD burning capabilities among its features. I also picked up a 17 inch flat screen monitor. And quite awhile ago I had snagged a Logitec cordless trackball-a mouse with thumbwheel cursor control(that's taking a bit of getting used to).

Yes, Terri, I love Henri Cartier Bresson's work too! He really could snap the shutter at the perfect moment. Whereas I am always about 30 seconds too late!
