Vidmaster - A Pebble in the Pond

Just randomly looking at people who are online, and I noticed that you're looking for book suggestions. If you're into science fiction and/or fantasy, you might want to stop by my space and join my so-called "literary discussion group." Not that it's anything fancy, I just like the sound of it.

Some authors I might recommend now, however:
Terry Brooks, Larry Niven, Fred Saberhagen, Alan Dean Foster, Simon R. Green, Christopher Rowley, Julian May, David Brin, and Robert A. Heinlein.

Thanks for the suggestions. smiley - smiley When I am not cooking and ocassionally while I am cooking I read. I have read some of David Eddings' works. I have read Tolkien, Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Roger Zelazny, and whatever else was around. Both of my brothers were members of a science fiction book club. So you see, I did not stand a chance of not reading them. I am looking for a good ghost/haunted house book for Halloween. History is another topic of interest as well as classic literature. Do you have an opinion of Anne Mc Caffrey's works?(smiley - erm) I have not read them. I was not sure about them. smiley - biggrin

Anne McCaffrey....Dragonriders of Pern. She wrote some other things too, I guess, but I never liked those much. The Pern series is all right, though it's been a while since I read the books. It's one of *those* series that aren't written in chronological order, so publication dates and story dates don't match and can be a little confusing. The books swing from fantasy (mostly the original trilogy) to science fiction, when Pern inhabitants discover computers. It's a good mix. I don't know when I stopped reading them, but I've donated all my Pern books to book sales and haven't even glanced at the newest book in the series. I guess I lost interest.

Thanks, maybe I'll borrow one or two to see how I like them instead of buying them first.

I haven't read that one yet, but I'm sure it's good. I would recommend Guards! Guards! or any of the others about the Ankh-Morpork City Watch.

Bookstores and software stores are my two favorite places to visit on vacation. Probably because we don't have any good ones where I live. There's a Waldenbooks for books, and a Walmart for software, and that's about it.

Liked reading Pratchett, thanks for the suggestionsmiley - ok. Currently between books and trying to convince my niece to read David Eddings' books. She says she will after the Lord of the Ringssmiley - winkeye. There is no shortage of books for her to borrow...in fact if I don't loan my books out I'll have to buy more shelves...or did I have a book on how to build shelves already?

I hope you told your niece to budget enough time for David Eddings. "Certain technical and philosophical themes concerning the genre" my electronic Thumb! The man spent more time creating the world than he did actually writing the books! He was still pretty good, though. And the Rivan Codex provided a lot of interesting information.

I still need to read Eddings. I've had him recommended several times, but still haven't picked up any of his books. Maybe after I finish reading book 9 of the Wheel of Time.

If she finds The Belagariad anywhere near as interesting as I did she won't put the books down until she finishes them. At least she won't have to wait for them to be printed like I didsmiley - sadface. There is nothing more frustrating than finding a book that is so compelling, reading it, and having to wait for the sequel(s) to be published.

Have you read the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny?

I've read the first five. They're some of my favorite books. I'm still trying to find the great book of amber somewhere, so I can have all 10 books in one place. And it's cheaper than buying the last 5 individually.

At the risk of sounding really dated: That was one of the series that we had to wait from year to year for the next one to be released. My paperback copies of the individual books are so old that I would probably replace them with a hardcover compendium. Same thing with my HHGTTG series. Actually someone borrowed and never returned one of them so my set is incomplete.

I have the Zelaznys in paperback, because my aunt sent them for Christmas a few years ago. Probably pretty close to the same edition you have. Mostly black covers, with a picture on the front of each.

My copy of HHGTTG is a nice leatherbound hardcover that I got for 16 bucks on special. Gottal love the bargin shelf.
