A little bit of satisfaction

I support Worcestershire County Cricket Club. Who have had an awful season- our ground, New Road, was flooded. Twice. We lost probably in the region of £1million (which is a lot more significant inc ricket than in football, for example) from having to play at the samller capacity Kidderminister Victoria Ground instead. Televised matches ahd to be played outside the county as Kidderminster does not have room for an Outside Broadcast unit (it's a bring-your-own-chairs sort of a place for spectators). We were relegated from the county championship (the main, four-day league) with games to spare.

And yet, amongst all this doom and gloom, a success. In Bristol yesterday, a magnificent batting performance ensured victory over Gloucestershire, and with a game to play, the Royals won the Pro 40 league (the national limited overs one-day league) with one game to play. Sensational batting fron young wicketkeeper Steven Davies and raw, aggressive young batsman Moeen Ali for the opening wicket helped us to victory, along with Stephen moore and the 41-year-old legend that is Graeme Hick, still the club's star player 23 years after his debut. And we clinched this witht he club captain on England duty.

It's Worcestershire's first major title since 1994, and a NatWest Trophy win over lcoal rivals Warwickshire. And it feels good. After a season of unremittingly msierable weather and results, a run of success in the Pro 40- 6 wins and 1 abandonment in seven games, has brightened the mood. We're still in a terrible financial state, and have a ground still suffering the after-effects of the flood. But we've won something. And, as Gareth Batty said when told by a Sky interveiwer that there was some champagne available to help hima dn his tem-mates celebrate, "We don't need any help celebrating!"

Yes Worcestershire have done well - as usual they won at Edgebaston of course.

Warwicks have had a dreadful season - they fell away at the end of last season, but this year they've hardly won a game since June.

Double relegation looms I fear - especially as we've been told Belly has got to be rested for the remiainder of the season. (though we need bowlers more than batsmen)

From the Birmingham Post re: your victory over us at the weekend:

"Warwickshire's win was like a man getting a brand new pair of slippers the day after both his legs were amputated"

Brilliant smiley - biggrin and I see they've appointed Giles - could be a bit premature....
