Off to New York in the Morning, tra la!
Zarquon's Singing Fish! Started conversation Jun 30, 2004
Getting quite excited about going. I've taken the day off to do packing at a gentle pace.
I've contacted a friend in New York to see if he is interested in meeting up - I lost his e-mail when I had the computer problems. He was there and there is a possibility to meet on Friday.
I also had somone at work volunteer to give me some great places to eat when we are there.

I don't suppose they have the Internet in New York so you'll see this when you get back. Hope you had a great time!

Hi all!
I'm now back from my travels. Thanks for the good wishes! I wrote a journal entry on the QM2, but it doesn't seem to be here. I didn't spend much time on-line as it was *very* expensive - 50c a minute!
Fb - yes, there could be a couple of entries from this visit - one about the QM2 and maybe one about the show we saw while we were ther - The Boy from Oz, with Hugh Jackman . He was great!
LSF - we had a wonderful time - the three most exciting things for little were 1) his British Airlines toothbrush and on-board socks - I've never seen him so anxious to clean his teeth, 2) moving between carriages on the subway - you can see the ground between the carriages - he said it was the bravest thing he had ever done! and 3) being up the Empire State Building.
Woodpigeon - we brought enough $$$. It came as a surprise that tipping for meals is generally at 20% rather than the 10% I'm used to over here - apparently many waiters don't get paid and have to rely on tips to make their living!
TiT - no crashes - not even hangovers. This holiday was about the driest I can remember. I think my first (actually it was ) was the welcome champagne on the QM2.
Dear AR1 - yes you missed us - we didn't get to the Carnegie Hall, but we did go to the Empire State Building, to Liberty Island to see the Statue, to the theatre http://www.theboyfromoz.com/intro.html - which was wonderful. Hugh Jackman was just brilliant. The reviews said that it was amazing that women screamed when he took off his shirt (and they did), considering he was playing a character who was as camp as a row of tents!
Gnomon - I didn't go to an internet cafe in New York - too much else to do - we could have done with at least another full day there. Our hotel was near Times Square, so we were well placed to do most of what we wanted. The queues were quite long and the security was ferocious - we have to go through three separate checks to get up the Empire State Building. For me that wasn't a problem, but for Roy, it really was - he has so many gadgets - things on belts, in pockets, that it was quite a performance.
Websailor - it would have been nice to have been able to do a round trip on the QM2 - we met quite a few who were doing that. We'd just got to know our way around when the trip finished. The ship has its own Planetarium as well as a largish theatre. I had a really nice Thai massage aboard.
Well, back to reality now - I've a couple of days before I have to go back to work. Little is back to school already.

*waves* - Hi TiT!
It may take some time - my computer's router went bang - when I arrived home yesterday, it had gone bang and I spent quite some while on the phone to my IT provider - they're going to send me a new one, meanwhile, I'm on a temporary dial-up service. Ah well, such is life!

Hi,
Glad you all had a good trip. Look forward to hearing a bit more about it when you have time.
I think I could do with a Thai massage right now. The british weather has been a real pain - I keep thinking "when the summer comes I'll....." then I realise it is here and nearly gone!!
Bye for now

The Thai massage was really interesting and beneficial, Websailor. If I had been able to afford it, I would have liked more treatments. It was done fully clothed and using a lot of heel of the hand and foot pressure. The masseuse told me off for not telling her earlier that I had a shoulder problem, as she could have concentrated on this. I did feel the benefit from the work on my legs, though, so I would have missed this if I had said just to concentrate on the shoulders.
Fb, Hugh Jackman was just stunning. Shame I was so far back, so I couldn't see him properly. If we had only thought to bring Roy's binoculars. He came outside afterwards to sign autographs too, I'm told - someone at my hotel (and a lot older than me!) got his autograph. Unfortunately, little was almost dead on his feet at the end, so I didn't think it would have been fair on him to have made him wait. I already thought he was lovely and he's gone up in my estimation. I didn't know he was such an all-round talent - dancing and singing as well as acting and looking gorgeous. Someone told me that on one performance, he landed against the side of the piano on the crease of his leg near his groin and ad-libbed until he got his breath back. A lot of people didn't notice anything amiss. He was great with the audience too - he spoke to late-comers and was very funny. He also got people out of the audience and had them do some dancing. There was also a 12 year old who played him as a child, who could really tap-dance and do somersaults! The people who played Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli were really good too. I can feel an entry coming up ...

Fb,
Ths Aussie who works in my team said that she saw Hugh Jackman in Perth, when he was a waiter, before he was famous. She said he was just a really cute waiter. I must ask her how long ago that was.
