If you're getting directions on Google Maps, you can change your routing by dragging things around, and then it gets updated with the new distance and time estimate.
We're thinking about going to Salt Lake City this summer--J and L from Sacramento live there now, and have given us an open invitation in writing (we pretty much had an invitation before, but it was vague enough for Tom to feel like he'd be imposing). There are also friends of Tom's from when we were attending HSU living there, that he hasn't seen since December of '99! And Marv and GDZ live there as well. (OK, so that's more an attraction for just me...) However, Tom says he doesn't want to do a bunch of traveling 'just to see a couple of people'--he'd be more willing to go if we saw other people/things as well. Well, by dragging things around, I've learned that going through Sacramento (family there) adds about 100 miles--not bad, especially when you consider that we wouldn't need to pay for lodging that night Plus going the Clearlake route to Sacto (the quickest way, as we've learned from the several trips we've made between Sacramento and Crescent City) takes us through Willits, which, while not where Happy Nerd lives, is pretty darn close *hint, hint* (If we do end up doing this trip, HN, I'll let you know, and maybe we can email phone numbers and such?) And we could always come back the route that Yahoo recommends, which is much more direct--Tom prefers to not backtrack, anyway.
Of course, this is all contingent on getting a car with better gas milage, and my talking Tom into making this trip in the first place...

You can also type in all the stops you want to make, up to and including ending up back at your starting place, in the directions box Very good for planning out complicated trips, not so good for getting to bed at a decent time

Do you want my address? It's a long drive to England does your car go under water?
I hope it all comes together and you have a great time

Maybe the genetic scientists can design flying fish large enough to take passengers across the oceans.
