I appear to have misplaced the address book (physical one) with the phone numbers and addresses of h2g2ers in the US. My notebook with overseas phone numbers is still here, I think... *looks* Yep, it is. (I had them separate because the one I added the US numbers to is a tiny one, and the other numbers and addresses are way too long) So, if I had your phone number, could you please re-email it to me?
I need to get around to finding a good deal on overseas calls, as well--I've got free long distance on my mobile, but it's just for domestic calls. It's been far too long since I've talked with anyone in the UK--I had a dream a few weeks ago, in which I was talking to Croz, and he sounded quite a bit like me (accent, voice pitch, and all). Now, anyone that's heard either/both of us knows that that's just *wrong*

*wonders if Canuckland is considered 'over-seas' ...*
Oddly enough, I have a packet with the phone company that allows me to call anywhere in the UK listings for 7-cents a minute, day, night or when-ever. Reguardless of the day of the week. Cheaper than any of the best bits to call my own daughter in Newfoundland. It just seems wrong ...

For squeezing-into-address-book purposes, yes I should have also said that if I *don't* have your phone number, and you want me to, email me. It just might be awhile before you hear anything.

It's okay if you've lost my address, Amy. I've lost yours countless times. My brain is turning to mush so fast it'll be ready to be your breakfast tomorrow morning .

Skype?

For Skype, or other VoIP connections, does both ends require to be on a broadband connection? A number of folks that I chat with are dependent on digiboxes or dial-up.

Stealth "Jack" Azathoth Posted Apr 4, 2007
A good dial-up connection should be OK.
Digibox, I doubt you could Skype with.

Rev Nick { Only the dead are without fear } Posted Apr 4, 2007
The same folks with the dial-up are on a pay-per-minute scheme. Expensive enough that it's reserved for serious usage on week-ends, when the rates are low. So I doubt phone/VoIP/Skype are an option.
I can't understand how, but Ma-Bell here is able to allow me a 7-cent-a-minute calling to the UK, any time of the day, night or week-end. And yet, the best that I can do to call my baby in Newfoundland is 10-cent-a-minute, and that during defined hours.

I thought Skype was for broadband only? I know that you can use Skype to call a landline, but I thought that the call originator had to have broadband *shrug* Worth looking onto, I suppose. I *used* to get 4 cents a minute to the UK, but then again, that *was* a couple years ago...
Oh, and I found my address book--right where I'd put it Though in my defense, there were boxes on top of it that weren't there a few months ago.

My understanding is that and an active Skype call will use about 34kbps of bandwidth.
It may be higher to a landline.
Even idle but signed in Skype does use bandwidth this may be something to think about if you have low monthly usage limits.
Skype to Skype calls are free so per minute dial-up charges may still be less than phone calls in some instances.

Hm... My internet's unlimited, so I may just have to look into getting a headset...
