You write that "non-software volume controls for the speakers." Yes there are -- they're on the keyboard: there's a "mute" key (switches mute on and off), an "increase volume" key and a "decrease volume" key. They can be found on the top row of the area of the keyboard otherwise reserved for the numeric keypad.

Depending upon which keyboard you use, anyway. Not on mine. Then again, I always use headphones (because I'm a music junkie and my parents hate my musical tastes) with a volume control built into them. Even so, the software only volume control isn't really a problem; the control srtip is right there, and your hand doesn't have to leave your mouse.

That's the standard iMac keyboard, as supplied last year. I believe the volume keys are still present on the keyboards provided with the new flat-screen iMac.

Yeah, I know. I'm saying not all iMacs are like that, as your original response implied.

In reference to the speaker volume control: the toolbar (at least in OS 9.0 and above ) has an icon of a speaker, which when clicked, opens up an image of a "slider" volume control.
I am not familiar with previous OSs, but both of my iMacs came with OS 9.0. I have since upgraded to OS 9.2.2 with excellant results.
