Better than Netmeeting?

Hmm, not *really* a programming question, but I figured this was a good place to ask...

I've just found a program on Linux -- palantir -- that provides a server and client for live video from a webcam... and does a much better job of it than netmeeting (not hard). There's a Java client as well as a windows one, which is ideal...

Unfortunately the server only runs on Linux, which means those I know who are stuck in Windows-land can't use it to send equally good quality video.

So -- anyone know of any good programs? I want something that'll serve a video stream from windows to linux, with at least half-decent quality...

Yahoo! Messaging seems to work; at New Year we used it to set up a 3-way camera link between Kemnay (just outside Aberdeen) and two Californians... smiley - geek

The quality was surprisingly good, considering we had one outgoing stream and two incoming all sharing a 56K modem (on a bad line) with IRC and a teenager playing an online shoot'em'up... smiley - ok

Hmm, sounds good... doesn't look like the Linux client supports video, but I'll try it and see...

Try Cygwin. Cygwin is a Linux emulation layer for Windows. I've gotten a variety of Linux-only software (particularly servers) to run under Windows with Cygwin. It's open source and pretty easy to install.

Hmm. I doubt it will manage the hardware/driver layer, though, which is the most important bit...

Does it support kernel modules at all?

If you have Windows hardware drivers it should work... It's only an emulation layer so I doubt that it supports kernel modules. The best thing to do is probably just to try it and see. It's not hard to remove if it doesn't fit your needs.

Hmm, I'd love to, but I'm not the one with the Windows PC... I suspect it's a little involved for those who are...

I'll bear it in mind as a possibility though smiley - ok

Your right, it's not hard...

*wonders how hard the windows USB video driver layer could be*

Marjin, After a long time of procrastination back lurking

For windowsXP you can try http://www.webcamxp.com/

Maybe it works also in previous versions.

You need a real IP-adres, and possibly a way through a firewall/router.

Cygwin really isn't that involved - the default install should do what needs doing. They'd have to be comfortable with the command line though.

Basically they'd just have to download the setup file, run it, pick a download server and go.
