a new linux distro? help

I am having a bit of a silly problem.
every so often I find that my current distro has changed something which has then fundamentally restricted how I can use it.
as you can imagine, I have been dealing with this by changing to a new distro every few years, but I am getting fed up with it.
out of pure annoyance, I have decided that I will have to "roll my own" distribution which has none of these silly and unnecessary restrictions built into it.
having decided to do this, I am requesting help from people who use linux so that I don't make the same mistakes that others have made.
I have started a thread at the linux user's group (over at A458228 ) asking for input, but the user group seems a bit quiet at the moment.
