It makes Microsoft more money.
Pascal is, IMO, not really any harder than BASIC. Depends of course on what flavour of BASIC you started out with... still, Pascal is a very nicely structured language. Not as good as C++ though (in my opinion).

It is, however, very firmly structured and you have to declare pretty much everything - which I guess makes it better for teaching...?

I am finaly getting the hang of pascal, as a matter of interest what language was the program further up the thread, it was either pascal, or something close enough that i could understand i!

If you meant the first of the bits I wrote, it was essentially Pascal (to the extent I remember the syntax correctly).
