This may or may not be true but the story I heard was this, in the original script there was one more replicant that Deckard would kill, but when the final draft was finished it was decided to shorten the film by removing this Replicant character, unfortuneatly in the scene where Deckard is told how many Replicants have escaped he is told the amount from a previous draft, thus meaning that there is a spare Replicant never mentioned, who turned into Deckard by a bunch of critics who had too much spare time on their hands.
