Good question.
I was fifteen when I first met Lord Hailsham in a charcuterie near Bangkok. We immediately recognised one another, and became firm friends. I liked his attitude towards the Boxer Rebellion, whilst he admired my expertise on the etiquette of Italian brothels.
Together, we visited a dance hall on the eastern side of town where we met Geoffrey (now Lord) Archer - or 'Pamela' as he liked to be called then. He bought us a bottle of absinthe each and a dessert spoon with which to signal the head waiter for more spoons.
It was a golden age, and I miss it dearly. And pork was so cheap.
