In Chile, during the reign of José Joaquín Prieto and his despotic minister in charge of keeping order Diego Portalas, a German-born man known as "Renous",who among his many talents was fluent in Spanish, was arrested.

What was the charge, and what did he keep in his house that got him into such trouble?

Google and Wikipedia are forbidden.

Points are awarded for being correct, more or less and extra bonuses for quirky yet erudite meanders. There are klaxons so ye be here warned, but strive always to be bold, preferably interesting, but never obvious.

Good luck.

I have absolutely no idea. I'll guess that he had books made out of some sort of pith containing stories about foxes translated from the German into Spanish, and that the charge was the deliberate dissemination of anthropomorphic literature.

A remarkably specific description of the literature there HD, umm... no nothing like that. But a good bold stab in the dark, we encourage that sort of thing. The boldness, I mean, the stabbing randomly when you can't see what's before you that's just risky... smiley - winkeye

Argh... I really haven't a clue, but I'll stride ahead anyway.

I'm gonna guess (with no reasonable reason to do so) that this might have been during the Spanish Inquisition. AND... and my knowledge of history is so poor regarding these subjects, sometime after Gutenburg pressed something, and Herr German fellow gets caught with an unauthorized bible.... or some other book. And a wild stab at the aphorism will have something to do with judging covers. I don't think it's a karaoke contest.

You may right bob;

Knowing the decade or century would probably help.

I do know there was a brutal regime in the 1960's or so. When they held the sailing ship parade in New York harbour for Independence Day in 1976, there were protests against the Chilean ship, the Esmeralda as I recall.

Several former Nazis went to South America after the war.

I have been quite busy, w*rking long hours and trying to keep up with some of the events in a smiley - senior community. We just had are big farewell party for the Canadians, and other northern residents, who are about to head north for the summer.

Regarding the Spanish inquisition, it's height was in the Middle Ages during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, but it hangs on until the early 19th century. So it would be pretty hard for our mystery *not* to overlap with the Spanish Inquisition, and indeed on this broad view it does, and if, unpacking all of that, what you *meant* was "no-body expects the Spanish inquisition!" then Baron have a DGI+1

However, "caught with an unauthorised bible" smiley - bluelight -5

"don't judge a book by it's cover" hmmm... that's a very tenuous DGI +1.

but nothing whatsoever to do with karaoke.

Bob, you escape, Baron heroically absorbed the klaxon for "bible/scriptures."

He still has most of his fingers. So not fatal.

Nothing to do with The Nazis, in fact this about a little more than a century before that.

//Don't judge a book by it's cover" DGI +1 - I should be clear that relates to the title clue more than anything, don't want folk getting confused. Well I do, but not more so than intended. smiley - evilgrin

I'm thinking the nickname is relevant, too.
Was it some sort of alternative religious text?
