Wasn't there another letter for the "th" sound at one point that looked a bit like a 'y'? Or is this just something I've wrongly remembered from QI?
I think I'm right in saying that the Russian Cyrillic alphabet had a number of unnecessary letters removed after the revolution...

No, I remember reading about the "th" character. It looked like a 'p' but with the vertical line extended equally above as below.
