On the evening of his first kill, Richthofen wrote to a Berlin jeweller and placed an order for a small silver cup to be made. It was to be inscribed with the date and the type of aircraft that he had shot down. On each subsequent occasion he ordered another cup. By 1918 the German economy was feeling the expense of the war and gold and silver was almost unobtainable in Germany. The jeweller was forced to write to Richthofen to say that he would be unable to produce any further cups in silver, but offered a substitute ersatz material instead. The cups stopped at No 60.
