Erm, perhaps a stupid questions, but I thought Xmas Trees were vertical?

if the christmas trees were made vertical it would increase the line space, making things look odd all over the place. thus it is horizontal.

it depends on your ratio of height to width. If the base of the tree were wider that would not be a problem. Artificial Smiley generators have created faux smileys where the tree was vertical.

The reason it's lying down is because it needs the rest. During the festive season it must stand up all day long, so it deserves a lie down during the summer.
