A Conversation for Guide Entries that Should Be Written
The Internet is a Wealth of Information

I think there should be a series of articles on how to search the internet, what the best engines are, how to phrase or type in words to get you what you want, and how to narrow the search down... I get to many people asking me how to find somthing and I think If I could just point them to a "HOW TO" site I would not have to spend two hours explaining everything from quotation marks to capitalizations...

Good idea, PyRex! It would have to cover every major search engine's quirks, though; if it concentrated on just one or two search engines the BBC might be accused of "favouritism"!
I'd like to see a snapshot of "Web Jargon" at the moment. Slang words which are not used in any specific country, but which appear on the web, either generally or in specific communities such as H2G2, Compuserve forums or Newsgroups. Although explaining how the "Linda" button got its name might ge the article "moderated"...

It might be difficult to discuss an entry like this though. Because of the rules against URLs. We couldn't recomend our favourite search engines via a discussion.

That is true, but seeing as it would be an article to help people find information they might allow it to be, I did mean all search engines, from Lycos to Microsoft, to GOTO. There are a lot of search engines out there and having links to all of them would be a big help to some people. I myself have problems finding info sometimes... and I will search to the death!

I quite like this idea, in a "how to get the best out of your search engine of choice" way, rather than specific search sites. Although they do seem to have quirks, they mostly seem to work the same. well, I tend to use them the same. It could be used to point out the difference between a search engine like google, and a directory like Yahoo!, and include the Guide of course. I'd be interested in researching a entry like this.

Well who wants to do it? I am willing to put in what I can, but I am not that good at writing stuff... Hmm... I think you have to compare different search engines, how each works, and their pluses and minuses, and which is most likely to have the answer you are looking for...

It was your idea, I don't want to take that away from you. Not being good at writing stuff is not a great problem, as there are places on h2g2 that will help you get better. They have me helped me.
I know how they work, as I looked into it when I wrote my personal website. It wouldn't take me long to refresh my memory, then I can give you any help that you need.
I'm more interested in a general look at search engines, rather than a comparison of them all though. So you'd have to do any of that.

Oops, missed that reply, sorry PyRex.
No, adding me to the entry just gives me credit. I'd have to write offline, or on my own entry, and let you or the sub ed put them together.
