I just got back from the pub a bit ago... made homemade garlic bread pizza... I did cheat though.... I had the dough just sitting about, all ready like... from earlier

Peanut butter and Marmite, one of my favourite combinations
I'm guessing there was a lock-in, 2legs. There'd have to be for you to be just getting home from the pub at 4am!

Sadly no lock in Not had a lock-in for years and years, and never, in fact, here in Cambridge
Was at the pub until the useual time (some time after 11), then back to a 'friends' via our friendly if unintelligible perveyer of late night beverages in a bottle so didn't leave his until... I think about 3 AM or thereabouts...
Pub was horrible last night though too cold out for anyone to be sitting out, so the inside was just so* crowded, and the new extension to teh pub, just has no sound absorbancy whatsoever beer was good though.... they had a beer, 3K, brewed especially for the pub, to celibrate the pub having sold over 3000 differnt real ales, since Jethro and his whife took over running it, err, either Tring or oakhams brewed it I think, I can't remember black squarl was good too, a dark beer/porter/stout, and another couple of dark ones, the names of which escape me.... which were rather tasty, and none of the beers they had on I'd ever encounted before, as useual, cept for the couple of regular beers they have on all the time and just had breakfast.... fried duck eggs, on the multigrain rolls I made yesterday

I was at the 'pub' last night too, or at least one of the bars in Austin that's as close to a pub as it's likely to be outside the UK Some very good beer, and even a beer engine with two pumps Although one of them usually has nothing on it
We ended up talking for so long about Doctor Who, Star Trek, being drunk as a teenager and how the bar has changed over the past few years that we both missed our last bus
Thankfully there's a night bus but it only runs once an hour and the next one wasn't due for 45 minutes so we had to find a way to fill in the time, and the bar stays open until 2am

There are less pubs that are like pubs, now in the UK. Its a very sad demise, to se so many turning into 'bars', and 'plastic replicas' of a 'pub'... and of course in some areas, just closing and ending up as housing or flats
The only places round here that regularly open late, during the week, are really rather terrible places, wehre lager prevails over beer Luckily there are still a few 'real' 'pubs' left, though sadly this does mean they tend to be rahter crowded all the time, round here at least A nice quiet sit down and a beer, means going to a pub where the beer is undrinkible, or just rubbish, Hows a girl meant to cope in the face of such adversity
Couple of pubs near my Father's closed in the past decade, very sadly, both pubs we'd been using for decades, and indeed one the first pub I ever had a pint of real ale in Oh, and a third, rather decent pub got redocorated, taken over and turned into a plastic version of what it was before It'll fail... I think, and then be turned into flats...
We need a pub conservation trust to save traditional pubby pubs...

In the early 70s there were still plenty of pubs that looked and felt like pubs, but if they belonged to one of the big six (some say seven) breweries, especially Watneys, they were very likely to have all the old fittings torn out, which to be fair were pretty awful in some cases after years of neglect, and turned into plastic palaces - widely used term for them at the time. The 70s - the decade that taste forgot
Thankfully the trend was reversed somewhat in the 80s, surprisingly, and a lot of pubs were retro-ed to look like the pubs in the Chas and Dave Courage Best ads with mop cap (some say mob cap) lampshades, etched mirrors and Victorian/Edwardian style wallpaper and fittings. And lots of polished brass. Yes, it was fake, but it was a lot more relaxing and pleasant to be in than the plastic palaces with their blaring juke box
So, plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. Sounds like it's coming round full circle again

I tried Peanut Butter and Marmite for the first time today
Not at all sure
maybe adding the cheese and avocado would help!

It's amazing what you can cobble together from that-stuff-in-the-fridge when you really need to And how it often turns out to be

Hi Alec, can't join in with th pub chat, but can sympathise with the late night munchies, it drives me mad. I try not to have anything in that is really nice and moreish, but Marmite toast works for me or cheese biscuits, goats cheese and pickled onions goes down a treat.
I shall have to try the Marmite and Peanut butter. I like both but the birds and badgers get most of the peanut butter
Hope you are

I'm sort of having something along those lines for dinner tonight. I don't want to do any shopping until tomorrow so it's split pea soup with some carrots that have been in the fridge rather too long, onion, garlic, a bit of Japanese seaweed, various flavoursome powders and botanicals, a handful of pearled barley, and some prosciutto offcuts and fat thrown in for good measure

And some frozen spinach. Which I forgot to add until I was liquidising it. A little more cooking won't hurt.
