I don't think you were at all out of line. Perhaps this situation was handled poorly by all involved, but I've read a good deal of the backlog and I haven't seen either you or Saturnine threaten, harass, or unfairly attack anyone, so those accusations go out the window.
What's more, I remember my dealings with you in the past and I was SHOCKED to read the accusations against you. I myself have always had a dislike for those who persist in using textspeak on h2g2, as the societal norms for the community are (at least!) an attempt at proper english. But the textspeak community seem to completely ignore that norm, and to me that seems rude. It seems to me that there are plenty of other places where they can go to converse with others who care to spend the time learning the "language", but here we stick to English! Plus, I really hate having to read a post three or four times to get the jist of it, only to discover it's some childish drivel I wouldn't have read in the first place. Oy.
So for what it's worth, I think you handled a bad situation as best you could, and I'd still love to hear your and Saturnine's opinions no matter what anyone else says.
And a for Saturnine as well.

Thanks, sea. It's good to hear that from someone such as yourself. I somehow respect that more from /you/. ..
I haven't noticed you about of late, by the way; You been around?

Hi sea,
Maybe that was the problem! You just couldn't be a*sed?! aka himself, was the person who brought us all here, and look how he turned out.
Maybe there really is hope for us digibox users, if people like yourself actually could be a*sed?
Hi aka,
It's your message centre, so I'd better say something to you ...

aka,
Perhaps because I've been around almost as long as G*d, in many different respects as a researcher? Or maybe because we have a friendship that goes back quite a ways? Or maybe just because I'm one of the few people on the site who isn't attacking you?
kow,
I am slightly confused by your reply to my message. I "couldn't be a*sed"? I don't remember ever saying I couldn't be bothered to read textspeak posts. What I said was that I did not appreciate having to re-read textspeak posts several times, only to discover that they were simply drivel to begin with, and something I would have skimmed and disregarded if I had read it in English?
So I am confused as to what, then, the problem is. The problem, perhaps, is that people persisted in using textspeak on a site whose norm is proper English, thereby annoying those of us who come here to escape the textspeak and a/s/l obsession prevalent in chat rooms and other web communities?
I do feel bad that digibox users are no longer able to access the site through their digiboxes. I gather, though, that they weren't SUPPOSED to do this in the first place, and are still able to if they find a legitimate way (i.e. a computer). I fail to understand why this is such a big issue, warranting the flaming of aka and Saturnine and your lurking on their pages and responding to messages left for them by their friends.
Perhaps this wouldn't have been an issue if digibox users hadn't persisted in making themselves such a distinct group on h2g2 by neglecting to adopt the societal norms that everyone else adheres to?
Just my $.02!

Well put sea!
I have unsubscribed from all the threads that featured what I think were unwarranted attacks on aka and Saturnine. The fact that they are still being harased by people elsewhere only shows to me that for whatever reason they had to act, they did it fairly (asking the community what they thought before they did it) and that the subsequent response was typical of the sort of person they (and I) objected to.

I am SO GLAD to hear that I am not alone in thinking that this whole thing has taken on a life of its own. I'd never support the banning of people from this site (save for extenuating circumstances i.e. Life Bans) but this situation isn't that at all.
Times like these bring out interesting sides of people. I always find it interesting to see who agrees with who on controversial topics. I'm finding this whole thing rather funny, save for the personally hurtful stuff. But if you don't take it personally, it's amusing.
And it's always nice to make new friends!

I would consider it an honour to have you as a friend. May I add you to my *friends* list?
I am much happier now that I have unsubscribed from the threads that were attacked. It's easy to slip back into the pleasant world of Hootoo that attracted me in the first place.

Certainly! I'd like to do the same with you, if you don't mind...
You know, I think I'll just do that too. The nicest part about the hugeness of h2g2 is that you can just avoid the troublesome bits and throw up an SEP field around them.

Thank you! I would consider it a compliment if you do include me.
I agree, one of the nicest things about this site is that you can steer a course that suits your own sensibility (or lack of it).

Glad you found this thread, Saturnine. I thought you could use some allies, seeing as this has turned into a bit of a witchhunt, if you ask my opinion.

Well, I suppose that's a matter of opinion. But I find it funny that I can no longer have a simple conversation with a friend without people barging into the thread to say I'm wrong.
Gnomon made quite a good comparison to this situation in another thread. He pointed out that, as a participant in the music industry, he was against the filesharing phenomenon. He then pointed out that if he was able to stop it, he probably would have. This is no different than what aka and Saturnine did.
So you see, it's not a matter of hating digibox users. You're all still welcome to come to the site!!! We'd love to have you back! It's just that you'll have to find a legal way to get here, like the rest of us do.

Yes I am extremely surprised. I am surprised that people barge into private conversations and make stupid remarks. I am surprised that spamming and flameing have substituted reasonable debate. I am surprised that email attacks have taken the place of logical arguement. I am surprised at the small, highly vocal support for illegal activity. I am surprised at vidictiveness, illogical behaviour, irrational arguements, and the occasional post that needs translation. Surprised and outraged, actually. btw, who are you and what do you think? What gives you the right to barge in and make stupid comments? Have you heard of the word *fact*?

Look up another word as well if you dare: History.

Oh great, another sock puppet.
Yes, I did lose my temper. But look how I reacted! One post that is well within the rules of conduct here. No flames. No trolling. No viscious, threatening emails. No spamming. And no assuming a sock puppet identity to hide my real one.
Imagine that.
Key: Complain about this post
