It should be added then that in some countries this is against the law with some exemptions. Buying a docked puppy when you intend to show it would be a very good sign of a *bad* breeder.

At the moment there is a bit of a state of flux. The kennel club will not penalise a dog for either a cropped or uncropped tail, if the breed standard asks for it. It is still acceptable to show a dog with a docked tail.

Just noticed my marine background sneaking out,
toes not tows, whoops.
I don't want to start a big tail docking debate but the issue seems to have been raised to please the animal rights lobby and to have ignored a lot of expert advice. There is a whiff of hypocrisy about it; in so much as it is ok to selectivly breed dogs such as Bloodhounds until their eyes are distorted or Bulldogs that can't breeth but not to prevent a working Spaniel's tail being cut to ribbons by a simple snip when the tail is only soft cartilage

I agree with you. I think there is a lot more damage being done in areas other than tail docking! I've seen it done and it doesn't seem to bother the pups at all if it is done properly and can save a lot of problems later for working dogs.

Hi, Powminator! Looks like you've fixed all but two of my queries - both are in the following para (2nd para 'During the Visit'), which should now read as follows:
If the sire (father) of the prospective pups is a stud dog, rather than one owned by the breeder, arrangements should be made to visit this dog as well, with the same points in mind (although they might not all be applicable). During this visit any relevant documentation relating to the sire should be carefully inspected.
If I knew you better, I'd probably advise against arguing .

I thought it done that one, rats! Tis fixed now.
I don't like arguing anyway, debate is fine but when it degenerates past that there's nothing to be gained by it.
Thanks again.

"It is still acceptable to show a dog with a docked tail."
Yes, unless they were docked after 6/4/2007 due to the new law. I appreciate your comments, and don't want to get involved in the wrongs and rights of the law, but the fact is, the law now exists in various forms in the UK and as you've mentioned docking, then it belongs in the entry as anyone wanting to buy a pup to show it should be aware of the issue.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
