just about everything in this movie is brilliant. the only things that are not brilliant are the effects, those are divine. all in all, there is not a single film that could approximately reach the ingenuous class of this movie out there. i must have seen this movie about a hundred times so far, and its still great every time, and sometimes i even get to notice new, tiny, brilliant details.
in order to fully enjoy the "jupiter and beyond the infinite" sequence, and to get a better grasp to its meaning, i strongly recommend you to consume certain psychoactive herbs.

I disagree. I feel teh film is all style, no substance. Just because it is inconcievable and mysterious doesn't amek it good. Hell teh plot was so dull they inserted a subplot about a psychotic computer. All effects and artyness doesn't make a good film.
Still, I concede that if you pick it up when teh discovery first appears and stop before the stargate sequence its good.
30 mins of docking, the tedium of commercial space travle brought to your living room.
