What about mistaken names?

I can think of one example immediately of a place name that is actually a mistake: Lake of the Woods in North-East Ontario. This was taken as being the translation of the original native name, but in fact it should have been translated as Lake of the Islands.
Can anyone come up with other mistaken place names?
