A Conversation for Canadian Toponymy
Gulf Islands
clzoomer- a bit woobly Started conversation Aug 8, 2007
Very good piece, I enjoyed it.
Just for interest's sake, some of the names of the Gulf Islands in Georgia Straight (B.C.) reflect the Iberian influence:
Gabriola, Galiano, Saturna, Valdes, Lasqueti, Texada.
While some others are seem to be mostly 'Anglo' names:
Thetis, Kuper, Mayne, Pender, Saltspring, Denman, Hornby.
On Vancouver Island in that area (where I grew up) most area names are Native: Cowichan, Quamichan, Koksilah, Tzeuhalem while what seems to be a Native name, Shawnigan is actually the combination of two Irish settler's names.
