yup, figured it out after trying 42 possibilities...strangely it worked on the 42nd time...

Just using +-*/, there are:
2+35+9+0-4 => 42
2+(3+5)*(9+0-4) => 42
2*(3+5+9+0+4) => 42
(2/3)*(59+0+4) => 42
