2x5=10, 10x5=15, 15-9=6, 6x7=42
will that work?

Nope, has to be in order. You're allowed to use brackets, so you could do the first bit of your calc:
5+(5x2) ? 7 ? 9
but you can't then take 9 from the 15, you have to do something with the 7 first, so you'd have to get 42 a different way I think.
