on the origins of the word blackguard.
I know it comes from Black Guard but why that should be come an insult is unclear.

Don't think so, although it is pronounced blaggard. Once dictionary I have gives the word as originating from Black Guard. But I'm not sure who/what the black guard were.

"The scullions and lower menials of a court, or of a nobleman's household, who, in a removal from one residence to another, had charge of the kitchen utensils, and being smutted by them, were jocularly called the ``black guard''; also, the servants and hangers-on of an army."
