A long piece of string can be very useful if in a group and lost in the fog.

If you are proper lost then stay still.
If it is just hard to see then send someone out on the correct bearing until they are becoming indistinct ( not becoming extinct!)Then send the next one out to do the same, ensuring that all are in a straight line. Continue "leap frogging" in this manner.
If you are close to cliffs etc then again staying still may be your safest option.
Burn the string to heat the water for you cup of tea .
