Little things in Gmail
GreyDesk Started conversation Dec 7, 2005
It seems that almost every day some little tweak gets added to Gmail.
Today I went looking for the 'Move to Trash' action in the 'More Actions...' drop down menu; only to find that it has been renamed as 'Delete'.

I just noticed that too. I do like their new anti-virus gadget. Last nightI downloaded an attachment I'd sent myself several months ago for safe-keeping, which I know has no virus in it, but the software scanned it all the same before presenting me with the link to get at the file Apparently it does the same thing with uploading too

That little ad for GoogleTalk wasn't there before was it?

GreyDesk Posted Dec 7, 2005
There've been ads for Talk floating around the page for a while. But I think you're right; today is the first day of it being in that particular location.
And another thing, in Opera the ad's border doesn't quite fit and overlaps the edge of list of e-mails. Ooops!

I was finding up until today that if I gave an email a particularly long label, or more than one label the little green label text would overlap with the 'New' window' link, but now it wraps to the next line

I guess I don't use long labels as I've never seen that feature.
However I do find the truncation of the labels list on the left-hand side rather annoying.

Well, every mail you get is labelled as 'Inbox' until you delete it, and if the subject line is a long one then 'Inbox' would have ovelapped.

I particularly like the facility whereby you can send out emails using other email addresses you have, Such as hotmail, Yahoo etc, or other Gmail addys you may have. However the last time I checked this out (setting up my wife’s email) this was only available if you use the 'Gmail display language - English (US)' and not 'English (UK)'
It was the 'English (US)’version that used the term 'Trash' too

It is good isnt it?
I find the "search" function invaluble.
Only trouble is I have a "public" email which is hotmail where all my adverts transactions ect go (and that I can give out on sites like hootoo) and a private gmail one. Meaning I have to "compare and contrast" hotmail and gmail every day. no contest.
I wonder is it possible to have two gmail notifiers running at once so you can use two simultanious gmail accounts?

Big, big changes today
The Trash is finally emptied. So instead of a couple of thousand deleted e-mails in there stretching all the way back to August last year, I've now got merely a couple of hundred for the last 30 days.
There's a tips thing that has appeared at the top of each of the boxes, 'Inbox', 'Sent Mail', 'Starred', etc. They're not particularly useful, but I *do* like the ones that appear above the 'Trash' and 'Spam' boxes. Where it gives me recycling facts like, "Recycled cans can be made into airplanes, appliances, furniture and more.". And a recipe for a "Spam Breakfast Burritos - Bake 5-10 minutes, serve with salsa" respectively

"You can make a lovely hat out of previously-used aluminum [sic] foil." What, even the foil I used to wrap up that leg of pork while it was in the fridge for a couple of days? Ugh.
I've turned the new web clips feature off in all my accounts.

We can't get gmail any more
Ever since they added the virus scanner all we get is a message saying the page has timed out

Yes, about 500 per month (Scouts, n2g2, ACEs etc). I keep well less than a quarter of them on file.
It's my other account that I worry about. That one is cooking up something like 1,600 spam e-mails per month! That is bloody annoying as occasionally a real e-mail gets filtered as spam and I miss it. Like the e-mail from British Gas telling me that my bill was ready to pay, and that if I paid it in the next week I would get a couple of quid off my next bill as a prompt payment discount

That's the trouble with using your real name (Though, oddly enough, ringwraith, who has a relatively unusual name, gets many more spam emails than I do with my more common one).

GreyDesk Posted Dec 12, 2005
I would accept that as a fact of life if my surname were a common one. But the thing is, it's not. Apparently it's ranked as about the 8,000th most common surname in the USA, with less than one person in 100,000 sharing the same surname as me.
And on top of that, it's a lot less common a name in the UK; as most of my ancestors who left Germany for a life in the New World didn't get off the boat in Southampton by mistake!

Yes but my point is if you're generating a list of names to spam, you'd get to hundreds of thousands, probably millions of people before you got to mine. Therefore one would expect everyone to be getting the 1,600 spam e-mail messages before I started getting mine.

Years and years ago I started off with Hotmail and foolishly used my real name . . . I still use that account for certain things but because my first name is usually considered a male name I reckon this is why I get so much spam on that account offering to have my penis enlarged. Not kidding, often ten or more spam emails a day just about that!
