70 years on and the Spit still makes the heart skip a bit.

Went back and reread my EG Entry A10422325 The Supermarine Spitfire - Aviation Legend, and it still does me proud smiley - smiley

You should have been in my garden a couple of weeks ago - I'm on the flight path for Farnborough, and we had a treat all week: Battle of Britain memorial flight, red arrows, etc. Didn't know what half of them were, but they made me gulp with pride.

If you ever want to go see a Spitfire fly like it was meant to, along with other 'real' aeroplanes from all ages, you could do worse than go here: http://www.shuttleworth.org/shuttleworth_aircraft.asp

That includes standing in the slipstream as the engine is run up. Things tend to get close up and personal on a small airfield.

For anyone who loves aeroplanes this place is pure heaven.

The pagaent air display on 7 Sept would be a good day to go. take a look at the flying list.

The Spit that used to belong to the actor Cliff Robertson was kept near where I live. No museum piece, it was regularly flown by Jerry Billings who shot down a few Germans in one like it. (not lately, but during the war)

I used to hear the Merlin from some distance and would run out of my house on Sunday mornings to see Jerry just barely clipping the treetops behind my house.
