International Women's Day is a political movement, instigated to ensure women's right to vote and take responsibillity in society, equality and world peace. As a Dane I'm proud it was agreed upon in Copenhagen 1910.

http://www.un.org/ecosocdev/geninfo/women/womday97.htm

During the 80es UN declared an International Decade for Women (litterally translated from Danish). I attended the midway conference in Copenhagen.

At the conference women of the Western world were very worried about infibulation (I hope I got this right) - and it was really revolting to listen to and see photos of the mutilations. In short it is done because men (religion and thus religious women) think that women are impure, (menstruation I think), and should be hindered in enjoying sex and thus be virgins at their marriages and have no incitive to be infidel.

In some cultures the women are sewn together only leaving a narrow passage for menstuation blood. When the man wants sex, she is cut open - and afterwards sewn together again. Most women become sterile from this treatment.

Of course in some African cultures it is alright to rape a virgin. Then the girl has to marry her rapist.

But still - at the conference - the representatives from countries which pratice these barbarian acts told us this was not the most important problem for them. Clean drinking water was number one. The right to possess oneself and one's children number 2. The man has the right of property over his wife(ves), his children, the land and everything. The women has the right to slave and be expelled.

In Denmark, which is a very regulated country supporting equal rights for a long time, women are still paid less for doing the same job as a man. It results also in smaller pension - reduced even more because maternal leave gives them less months and years to build up the pensoin that is part of the wages. And women live longer than men.

Although males/employers/top politicians think they practise equality - they still do hire and appoint people who are like themselves - reflect their values - and miss out on diversity.
