Okay, first thing, go to the top right of the screen and click on preferences.
Then change the skin from Pliny to Brunel.
Then click the Update button at the bottom.
(From now on, after you log on, you do those three steps right away to get into Brunel.
Brunel, or any of the old skins, work better than Pliny right now.
Pliny is a new skin designed just before we left the BBC and launched our own spaceship
Okay, second thing, click on this link
http://www.h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/brunel/U14997709
That's you in that skin we call Brunel.
Favorite it or Bookmark it or whatever you do in your browser.
Then you can click on it to get to h2g2 and sign in.
http://www.h2g2.com will take you to the home page, it is always in Pliny.
Pliny has problems but the volunteers are working on it.
Your ace will probably fill you in on stuff.
If you are not logged in and you go to your Brunel bookmarks, sometimes they will not work, so I guess it is best to log in and reactivate Brunel (first three steps) to do stuff here, even just read.
Here is another nice link:

If you cannot see a long message from me in that last post, or some of the links, then do this:
Okay, first thing, go to the top right of the screen and click on preferences.
Then change the skin from Pliny to Brunel.
Then click the Update button at the bottom.

Remote technical support can be so humorous.
Assumptions being what they are, they are still quite necessary.
It is so hard to know where the trade-offs would be best made.
Terminology is most important.
Good job clare.

I have been foruming for some time . Here 2 years ago. Vogons found me but ended up "Sorry..." .
Thanks for your help I'm sure Brunel will sort me out. As to links......is it me?

Some toboggans are conspiring against me??
Smileys, yes, in GuideML, they should be of format <SMILEY TYPE="artist"/>, but in conversation threads you just use the smiley name inside the chevrons, without the smiley type bit. but without the spaces.
Links. I haven't really figured them out yet but I've only been around for a dozen years here
Inside a conversation, just use the A-number A87753135 but remember NOT to put it first in a line:
A87753135
And to leave spaces before and after. Ending with a dot will hurt. I think. A87753135.
Specific links to a conversation post are skin specific, sadly, and I can't remember exactly how. Sorry.
Within GuideML, use links like described here: A957369 like
Name of article or
The text that you want to form the link itself
The GuideML clinics are a good resource...

Oh haha. Pliny plays games with my instructions... it parsed the spaces I put inside chevrons, and still made a < ta > smiley.
And it moved stuff I put to explain the link syntax away, so it didn't show at all. I wonder if that was because of the preview?

This is what I tried to say:
Within GuideML, use links like described here: A957369 like
Name of article or
The text that you want to form the link itself

Noooo! I'm so sorry about this! But you can see the link structure to use, on the page I pointed at...
Within GuideML, use links like described here: A957369 like Name of article or The text that you want to form the link itself
(Just trying to see if it makes any difference if I put the text within a row and not first, sorry for troubleshooting)

I was advised by me ACe to try chrome. So I did.Is there something wrong with this structure? I put it in as guided. It does not form a link in preview, does it only do it when published. Here is the paragraph. I apologise if I am being an idiot. 2nd Day n all that. Appreciate your time. Anyway...Heres the paragraph. I am a member of such a community. It is called Second Life. There is a continuing debate as to whether it is real. Let me give you some idea what second life is like. Then we will see if it is real or not. I write here: greater than LINK HREF="http://sl.irishsecure.com" TITLE="My Second Life"> Second Life Blog greater than forward slash LINK lesser than. It doesn't work. By the way the above LINK etc does not display here so I removed the first greater than and at the end I wrote it. Heres a bright idea for all you folks who must click. Hey we have brains. In a lot of my writings I type " Hey visit my blog its at sl (dot) IrishSecure (dot) com. " This means that you remember it, you can tell a mate by, omg, speaking to someone. Plus we all sub vocalize. Bet you remember my blog address. Sorry only sayin what I do.......

I tried to write a reply illustrating what I do. With an example structure to show you. It went straight to the editors. I give up.I put in the LINK as directed it does not work in preview. I was told by ACE that I should try Chrome. I am. It doesn't work I typed the LINK structure here it did not display.
I will not insert links in my writings I will use my own method by saying Visit my blog at: sl (dot) IrishSecure (dot) com.
I have spent half a day on this. Please do not continue to waste your time. I use html5 in my work.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH PLEASE READ MY ENTRY WHEN I HAVE WRITTEN IT
Ta & Bye

Are you sure you are in the GuideML mode, not Plain text mode? You need to be in GuideML mode, for html and GuideML tags to work.

I'm so sorry this is frustrating for you. I will ask some more experienced GuideML people to help you.

Vip Posted Nov 28, 2012
There are two ways of displaying text on h2g2, plain text, or GuideML (which is a custom version of XML, if that helps).
All conversations use plain text. If you want to write a link, you don't need the tag at all, you just write www.example.com. If you want to write a smiley, you need to put the smiley in a pair of brackets , but not use the full SMILEY tag.
If you are writing an Entry (which includes your personal Space), you can choose between plain text (which is the default) and GuideML. It's probably best to stick to plain text as that is much easier to start with.
A starter's guide to GuideML can be found at A69370509 if you want to use it.
