Or is there anyone with interests in "not so common music" including everything from old Michael Jackson to Chick Corea?

Personally I'm getting extremely annoyed everytime I turn on the radio, I mean; do they have to play overproduced, ten-of-a-kind-songs CONTINOUSLY???

ROBERT FRIPP FOR PRESIDENT, NOW!!

I know.

Growing up I listened to whatever came along of hitlist music, but when I started playing in bands as a teenager my taste in music changed radically.
Pearl Jam just didn't cut it anymore, and after a while we became a core of people who's only (?) interest was "new" types of music.
King Crimson and Yes were some the first, and ten we dove deeply into everything from Gong to early Chick Corea (some of the 70's stuff he did with electric band is amazing) to Norwegian bands such as Tangle Edge.

It was only a couple of years ago I first heard of the Ozrics, and it didn't take me long to become addicted.

A band worth checking out is the Squirrel Nut Zippers. They are playing some jazzy stuff that I think is pretty unique these days...

Anyhow, as I'm getting older I tend to fall back on the things I listened to as a kid.
Old Michael Jackson and Madonna are really kicking!!

Growing up I didn't really listen to music, until about 17 or 18. I just listened to what my parents were playing - Dubliners, Spinners, Corries, Monty Python. Then in the last year of school they played the Eagles and U2 non stop in the commen room, so I started to like them, then expanded into Simon and Garfunkel (when I started to play the guitar), on to Paul Simon and Depeche Mode (I was listening to Violator when reading The Helliconia Trilogy - goes well together smiley - smiley When I reached Uni it was similar, then I heard Mercury Rev in '91 and away we went - on to Spiritualised (when they toured with the Rev) and their former incarnation Spaceman 3 , got into the Blues from the guitar, listened to loads of compilations, started getting some CD's together - then we were burgled (bunch of savages in this town) and they took 150 odd CD's - bastards so had to start again smiley - sadface
As I get older I am starting to listen to world music more - recently got a CD called Altai-Hentai, a band from the Mongolian Steppes. They sing and play traditional stuff. Saw them live and they were very good, horsehair fiddles and throat singing smiley - smiley Excellent....

Everyone knows that Erpland is one of the greatest albums of all time. It's just that we're all very quiet about it...

I cannot remember the names of the albums, but I remember the covers (well sort of) - I liked the one with Ozric mannie looking over a sea scape with a weird sky (it was six or seven years ago since the burglery, so a better description than this is going to be unlikley smiley - sadface

I started listening to Bon Jovi. Then i found Nirvana and realised that Bon Jovi were...unnecessary. After that, it was Metallica, Fear Factory, Slipknot, Silverchair and others. Metal aside, i think Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay and Mercury Rev all make nice noises. Ozric Tentacles - the best band name ever?

I like They Might Be Giants. It seems not many people have heard of them. Their best albums are Flood and Apollo 18. I think it's called Apollo 18.

Another fine band name is Alabama Thunderpussy. A reference to an american cat home, of course.

Ozric Tentacles is not only a good name, they also make excellent music.
They released a new album just this year called waterfall cities, but everytime I go to the record shop, they are sold out.
I got some of it from Napster, however, and it seems to me that this could be a masterpiece in the same category as Erpland and Become the other.

When it comes to bandnames, my personal favourite must be Belly of an Architect...

Wow! what incredible names! Alabama Thunderpussy is simply the BEST name I have heard for a long while. I laughed a lot. Strange one, Belly of the Architect. Never heard of them.

Punk bands, in the UK, in the early to mid-80's tried to out-do each other with more and more outlandish and revolting names. Most of the music was very similar with these come-and-go groups anyway, so the NAME was the hook.

The "Fruit Eating Bears" was from such an age and was, I believe, a Bristol based punk band.

But for sheer, "can't be forgotten-ness" (good word), try these:-
"Throbbing Gristle"
"Rancid Phlem" (how do you spell FLEM?)
"Severed-Head and the Neck F**kers"
"Crackling Fingers"
and of course the "Stranglers".

Ozric's is great, just to say. I haven't listened to King Crimson in a LONG WHILE, but I seem to remember it was good stuff.

I like AMAROK by Mike Oldfield, anyone else?

Freddie.

I found a fantastic band called Stony Sleep a while ago. They only released two albums and have now sadly split up, but both albums were very good. 'Music For Chameleons' and 'A Slack Romance' - order them now. They sure aren't going to be in the shops.

When I was listening to King Crimson, Eno, Bowie, early Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, and early Pink Floyd, my wife was listening to Hendrix, the Dead, and opera. Down vis svety dude tunes, up vis Jim Reeves (and don't forget High Noon, Marty Robbins, or Laurie Anderson). And above all, Van Dyke Parks. But what's in a name? Ummaguma.

Hello, Big Daddy and all you others.
Just came back from a two week wacation.

Nice to see so many tagging along!!

You mention Stony Sleep. What kind of music are they playing?
Have any of you heard Tortoise?
Bought their album TNT in Germany (it should be available everywhere)
and they have some very interresting stuff.

For the jazz-heads I would recommend Pat Methenys Imaginary Day or some of the early Chick Corea (with Elctric band!!)

Stony Sleep have split up now (sadly). They played a kinda guitar-driven Nirvana/Radiohead thing.
Never mind good band names, i've just come across a record label called 'I Used To F*ck People Like You In Prison'. I want to get there phone number and see what they answer with (Good morning, I Used To F*ck People Like You In Prison records, how may i help you...)
