h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hi, I'm currently in Year11 and in just under a months time I have to hand in my A Level choices. The problem is that all my teachers are saying totally different things . I know that I want to do Physics and Maths and I would like to take Physics further due to my interest in Astrophysics and Cosmology. What I need to know is how necessary Further Maths is in A Level and Degree Physics courses. Only one person doing Physics does further maths at my school and I'm worried that if I do do it 3 of my 4 subjects will be Maths related.
All the Maths teachers say I should do it but all my teachers are saying I should do their subject so it's really hard deciding which subjects to drop (I like them all!)and who to listen to. Basically, if anyone who has done Further Maths and has found that it helped with their career, or anyone doing Physics,or anyone with nething to say on the subject at all could give me their opinion it would be greatly appreciated.

To find out about what subjects are needed for the degree course, the best people to ask are UCAS, they deal with the university applications. They might have a website if you check a search engine.

I'm currently in Year 11 and I'm going to do Further Maths and Physics... I think it's not actually necessary to do Further Maths if you want to do a Physics degree, but they'll be a lot happier to take you if you do. I'm not sure though. Best to ask UCAS as IE says.

I get the sneaking suspicion you might be following me around Ming!!! Not that I mind, but I can't help wondering...

Having further maths *sounds* good and would give you that deeper understanding to help you later! So I'm sure they'll be especially happy to accept you with that!
In fact, I just took the liberty of checking out the UCAS site for you. The majority of listed Physics courses need AS/A level Maths and Physics. So though you don't need *further* maths, it would probably be a good idea to take it if you're so inclined! Especially if you were to look at/consider somewhere like *gasp* Oxford or Cambridge.

Thanx for your help, both of you, its always helpful to have someone else's opinion. Just incase anyone's interested (probably not but here goes anyway) I did decide to do Furthur Maths next year along with Physics, Maths and Chemistry. All my friends at school say i really am insane but i'm looking forward to it.

As for GCSE's, 30 days to go! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm on study leave, so I haven't actually seen them... that's how sad my social life is! But my family didn't seem to care much. As my mum said "who's he then?".
GAH!!! How??? Can people be so ignorant?? One of my friends didn't even know about the books till I got bored one day in Chemistry and started writing 42 in the back of my book...

My friends, the majority, knew but knowing my obsession, didn't want to upset me by saying anything and said nothing until I had. Once I had, a few were really supportive, especially when I almost started sobbing again [must get those emotions in order...], but most of the rest were like "Huh? Oh, that guy whose books you read? What were we talking about again..." Which didn't really help!

My Mum was the best. She came upstairs with me as soon as we heard and I opened up h2g2, which was difficult with tears rolling down my face! We read the dedications and they had her crying as well as me then.

I must admit I did introduce a few people simply because they asked me on Monday why I was so miserable and I told them, book details and all. Been reading the Times newpaper, with their supposedly 'whole chapters' of hitchhikers... which have <> parts missing! All to the good I expect: get more readers?

None of my family have read any of the books so they didn't understand why everyone was so upset. Someone at school finally mentioned it on Friday. We were all wearing blank stickers and i wrote "Mostly Harmless" on mine, and eventually someone saw it and realised what it meant, which opened a conversation about h2g2. Some people have been introduced to the books after reading the quotes i have written all over my pencil case (most ask what song they're from).
