Oh no, it's perfectly normal beast. Are you a vegetarian? Let's look in the saddle bag and see if there are any other sandwiches.
*root root root*
Cheese and tomato?
Here are some carrot sticks. *All the horses look up with interest*

WOW!!! This sounds like a wonderful place to put my incomparable stallion Nero. I would like to request a box for him (since I have yet to teach him to speek yet.) He is a grand prix dressage mount so he will take the upmost, tip top care, which I think that he would receive here : )

Hallo trin! Glad you finally made it out here! mari-rae, Bluebottle, Titania, Irv, Cchick, please meet trinityisstillmyname, whom I call trin for pretty obvious reasons... Daughter of Twotrees, owner IRL of four horses, a dressage enthusiast... New to h2g2.
trin, as you've followed us out here, why not dismount and have a sandwich? We'll discuss stabling arrangements for Nero when we get back to the yard. You can pick which box you would like Nero to have.

We need to be moving along, I think, before BB really starts to hurt. Keep the body moving! Non-riders don't realise this, but riding is one of the top 10 in strenuous sports. Like swimming, with every muscle in motion.
From what I see on the nature documentaries, gnus like to form vast herds and migrate, kind of like bison and caribou. Do you have any population control in mind, BB? These gnu will have to share this pasture with horses and ponies, and I may have a few llamas. Plus, there's the possibility of raising Perfectly Normal Beasts for the h2g2 food market.
Shall we pack up, get mounted and ride to the farm, then? There's a dirt road leads from the farm right back to the stable, so we'll have done a rough triangle, topologically.

Before I give an answer I'll be forced to stick by, I'd rather consider all the implications - ie grass type, grass yield, average diet, percentage of inpassable terrain, number of horses, llamas, perfectly normal beast etc, their diet. Plus number of hedges, predators, the development of the gnu's immune system and any other relevant factors...
...It's a lot more complicated than just plonking animals in a field, you know....

Blubottle, you would make an excellent farm manager.
*goes over and holds her hands together for Titania to step up onto Gandalf* The new bridle looks well on Gandalf!

When the horses realize that they are heading for home, watch how much livelier they step!

*retacks Benny and Rimshot, then helps Bluebottle remount*
*The gnus stand around making that odd grunting noise gnus make, watching the riders*
*Lil packs the saddlebags with the sandwich wrappers and finally mounts up*
See that big freestanding boulder peeking over the trees over there? *pointing about 90 degrees counterclockwise to where they entered the valley, to the edge of the pastureland* That's the biggest one of a group of stones scattered in that immediate area. A trail runs through there. I call the biggest rock O-San (Mr. Big). Anyway, it's all piney wood, quite like being in Maine! We go through there and then we'll come to a gate, which is the back entrance to Blue Steed Farm.
Maybe Amos will be there. He said something about harrowing the hayfields to turn the stubble under, so we might see Bonnie and Clyde at work!

C unfortunately missed the picnic, but urges Shamrock into a trot to catch up with the others on the ride back to BSEC. She doesn't eat PNB anyway.
Are you a member of the H2G2 Vegetarian Society, dear?
For a really strange role-playing adventure tangentially involving the magic wood, go to the Aroma Cafe and click on the forum "most likely up to some good," mari-rae. If you would like, you can come join me where I currently am, in whatever guise and carrying whatever you'd like, so we can be transported to the alternate reality the others are in.
