So, what, precisely, did the launch entail? Was that simply when the folks at TDV flipped a switch and connected their little website to the World Wide Web? I understand there was some period of time where the entries were written by staff before it was opened up to the greater public. And even then, it was a small group of early users before the gates were opened to the masses with the announcement on Tomorrow's World.
I, apparently, got here the same day as all those unwashed masses that watched Tomorrow's World after I got a cryptic email from registering (or maybe just anticipating) Starship Titanic. That was the great onrush of 9.9.1999.

I'll eternally be a newby - there should be a 25 years badge, for anyone who's been on the site 25 years.... - then a 50 year one... - I'm planting giant redwoods soon, so I intend to get my 100 if not also the 150 year badg(ers) for being on the site

The redwoods aren't giant when you plant them.

That would be Towel Day, Jim. It was first held 25 May 2001, two weeks after Adams' death on 11 May.
There has to be an entry about hootoo's history somewhere in here (I know there's at least one on W*k*). But where

Redwoods, you might try for all three species.
Besides the two California species, the coastal Redwoods and the alpine Sequoias, there is also the Chinese Metasequoia, which is not an evergreen, but turns rust-red in the autumn.
There are already experimental plantings of it in the UK.

Now I'm reminded of Randee of the Redwoods and his MTV commercials of the late '80s.
