Gnomon - time to move on

Daughter El got her results yesterday! This is her final school exam, the Leaving Certificate, which is roughly equivalent to the UK's A-levels, but with less detail and more subjects. She got three A1's, an A2, three B1's and a B2. That's pretty good, putting her in about the top 5% of the population.

This should be more than good enough to get her into the university course of her choice, but we'll have to wait until Monday to find out, as there might be a sudden glut of people with better results wanting to do Irish and music. Probably not, but it's still fingers crossed until Monday morning.

El was delighted with her results. She expected the A's but thought she would do badly in mathematics, predicting she would get a C. Instead, she got a respectable B2 (75 - 80%). She spent the evening celebrating with her friends and drank 1 glass of cider!

That's really good news. It's a fantastic result, and I'm delighted that she should be able to follow what she really wants to do. Too many people just see "points" and end up doing something they are not suited to.

El's been offered the course she wanted in Trinity College - Irish and Music. She got an A1 in each of these subjects in the Leaving Cert, so she's well qualified.

She's doing a conducting course this week, and last night she was thinking about taking over the choir in the local primary school as practice for her conducting.

Thought she would get straight in there. Marvellous! It is a nice place to be, in TCD. Go néirí a cuid scoláireachta léi!

Conducting is terrific. Few activities give such instant and plentiful feedback! She could easily become addicted, and I know no better thing to be addicted to.

Wow, that was close! In previous years, you needed 530 points to get into that course. El had 560 points. This year you need 560 points. So she barely made it! Music + one other subject is the 4th hardest course to get into in Trinity College.

That's terrific! It's amazing how a student with 560 points might not get what she or he wanted.. 560 is way out to the right on the bell curve..
