As for why
the differences between the numbers are 3 4 5 6 7 6, so assuming the differences will drop in the same way they climbed, the next diff is 5 - hence 41.

45, add the number of letters in the previous number

Or...
You add the number of letters in the word spelling the number.
So, 1 + (ONE) = 4
4 + (FOUR) = 8
8 + (EIGHT) = 13
etc.
Thus:
36 + (THIRTYSIX) = 45

4-8 =4
8=13 = 5
13-21 = 8
21-30 = 9
30-36 = 6
36-39 = 3
so, its due to the increasing integers by a factor of X x Y over Z and then the reverse of the second divisible over the prime factor.

*Usually* Greebo doesn't specify a 'why', and you can get away with the 'shoot first, answer questions later' approach.

Actually, I think Marjin's expanation is wrong.
'add the number of letters in the previous number'
There is no number previous to 1 in the sequence. So that doesn't work. We know what was meant, but that isn't what was said.
Whereas Danny's explanation is fully consistant.
I suppose we'll have to wait for Greebs to clarify.
