It was time to send the kittens to camp, and Greedo T. Cat and Puss E. Galore, my American cousins were shopping for supplies. They spent half the money they had plus $4.00 on socks for the kits; half of what was then left plus $3.00 on name tapes; and half of what was then left plus $2.00 on a small wallet for each kitten. They found themselves with $3.00 left over, so they treated themselves to a glass of cold milk each. How much did they start with?

I have to confess... I'm sure we've had this question (or one very like it) before.

Can't we have a separate list based on number of second places? I'd be well ahead on that one...

Danny - if I ever did meet you in a dark alley - I'd shake you by the hand and say 'well-played sir'.

And then nick your wallet.

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!! 1st time here to see the question in MONTHS!!!

Half way through the working and the Blinking PHONE has to ring!!!! smiley - grr

Working (in case it gets extra points):

Original amount of money = x

amount of money after original purchase = y

so

y = x -(x/2+4)

Amount of Money left after 2nd Purchase = z

so

z = y - (y/2 + 3)

Amount of money left after final purchase = $3

so

$3 = z - (z/2 + 2)

=> 2z - z - 4 = 6 => z -4 = 6 => z = 10

If Z = 10 then

y - (y/2 + 3) = 10 => y - 6 = 20 => y=26

If y=26 then

x - (x/2 + 4) = 26 => x - 8 = 52 => x = 60...

Thus original amount of money = $60.... smiley - grr

Hi all... it has come to my attention... ~Greebo nods her thanks at Titania...~ that this question has been posted before... so therefore it is not fair to continue using it...

This question is herby nulled and voided... thrown out into the abyss of time and space... to float forever lost until found by researcher some time in the future...

A new question will be posted sometime in the next 15 minutes... ~grin~

Sorry about that chaps... stiff upper lips what!!!

Greebs.. xx
