Quality of roads in Norway

Beeing a Norwegian I can only agree with all that has been said on the topic of driving here.
Another thing to comment on is the quality of the roads. Even if there is no constructionwork going on (not often mind you!) the quality of the roads and streets in Norway leaves quite a lot to be desired.
On the other hand there is an excuse for this: Norway is a quite large country (well, long anyway) and it is not exactely densely populated. There are after all only about 4 million of us (not counting sheep and elks). And the landscape is not the shape of a pancace (like Denmark or parts of Germany, just to mention a couple), so building roads is an expencive affair. Thus, if you are planning to travel in Norway take into account the quality of the roads. 4 lanes are seldom found - only around the larger cities (well cities ..... larger villages ...)
Another thing: remember that the distance from Oslo to the North Cape is the about the same as the distance from Oslo to Rome Italy, only the landscape (beautifull if you ask me) and the quality of the roads might differ ......

What has impressed me most is that there seem to be only three locations in Norway which actually could be called cities. For the rest, they are very beautiful small towns and small wide spots in the road.
Another Entry should be dedicated to one of these three cities, namely to Bergen. The only traffic rule I could observe there was: If a thing is a road, then it is a one-way road. I don't know what the creators of this road system were thinking, but maybe it is to keep the tourists out of town? Hmmm, anyway, as soon as you turn left where you should have turned right, you've lost and have to follow the (wrong) road until you're out of the city proper and then try getting inside anew.

No kidding. Driving in Bergen is liking trying to find your way out of (or in to) a giant maze.
It doesn't exactly help that most Norwegians drive like schmucks, either. I am one, and I drive like a schmuck. I would know.
