""Bob knows what else""....suppose there must be an app for that as well

Sometimes those permissions can seem more invasive than they actually are. For example, there are plenty of reasons an app may need access to your camera and microphone. For instance, maybe you can enter your time via voice or by snapping a picture of a time card or something like that.
That all said, there ain't no damn good reason a time sheet app needs access to your contacts.
As I've seen phrased elsewhere, "Get in the... sea!"

Now, what is that all about? For a while I followed someone called GETINTHESEA on Twotter, until it got too repetitive and uninteresting. Is 'get in the sea' some aspect of popular culture that's done a body swerve around me?

My employer uses an online time clock that is supposed to interface with the major payroll system that they subscribe to. It doesn't work, it's glitchy as all get out.

I really don't know what's wrong with a simple clock-in, either with a punchcard or, like we did at my last job, through the point of sale terminals with a plastic card. It's not like we've got hundreds of employees.
Today's going to be interesting. We're going to have the weekly employee meeting offsite, and at the end of the day rather than at lunchtime. So we won't be going back to the brewery afterwards, and even if anyone is, the place where we're holding the meeting is closer to where I live than the brewery so I won't be too interested in accompanying them just so I can get on the interwebs there to clock out, and this system has no way for managers to adjust someone's time.
If I can't find a wi-fi network with the laptop (or the phone and use the website interface as I normally would), I'll just have to wait until I get home to clock off.
I thought computers were supposed to make life easier

If you're going to have an internet-based system of clocking in and out, you'd think a good internet connection (which ours has never been) would be pretty important, right?
No-one could clock on this morning because the internet wasn't working

There's one thing I don't really understand: if it's Internet-based, can't you clock in from anywhere? The point of stamping your card in a time clock is you have to be at work to do it. If it's online could you clock in while still in bed?

Yes, you could. But at the end of the pay period when they come to make up your wages I think they'd wonder why you were clocking in at 6am... no, wait, I'm always out of bed by by 6am these days Why you were clocking at 5am when you're scheduled for 8.30.

The point being, you're supposed to clock in and out at your scheduled time, and if you clock in but you're not there, someone's going to wonder where you were.

I still don't get it though - if it's expected that you'll be clocking in and out at the same time every day and the workplace is such that it will be noticed if you don't, I don't see the need for clocking in at all.

We use a web based system. Our time is broken down py task orders according to our budgets from different divisions. For some people this means keeping track of actual time worked on individual projects, but for me, and most of us in photo-imaging, we have a "spread" we divide our time across. Were supposed to enter our time within an hour of quiting time or arriving the following morning. But everytime there's a holiday we have to fill it out and "sign" for the week a day or two early, Thurs or late Wed. I'm not entirely sure of the reason for this.

It's mostly a matter of numbers, KB.
When there were only half a dozen of us working here it was easy enough for us all to keep track of our hours on a little spreadsheet our office admin sent out every two weeks, then send it back to her at the end of the pay period and she'd collate that info and send it off to the payroll company. Things like requests for time off were done on a company Google sheet.
Now though, there's three times that many on the payroll and it's getting beyond what she can deal with, along with all her other duties, so we're using this new company. And it's all online. In the cloud
