I found out quite by accident last night that I can turn off the screen (but not lock it) with a short press on the power-off button (the one on the right hand side of the phone). Once the screen is off you can't make bum calls or calls
I think.

Correct. The reason I still recommend a using a screen lock pattern, code or finger print is in case your phone accidentally come on in your pocket. Without unlocking it you still won't but dial or butt launch various apps.

I already set a fingerprint unlock. If the FBI have my dabs I reckon my phone should too.

I got a phone call yesterday. I hit every damn icon I could find on the screen, but apparently none of them answer the phone

Android?
I got caught when I first had one, Put finger on green answer and then drag your finger across the screen to outside the green circle.

Actually I think I know what happened. As you removed the phone from your pocket it may have dismissed the call. (Was it still ringing when you were pressing icons?) What you should see when a call comes in are two circles at the bottom of the screen, one green to swipe right to answer and one red to swipe left to dismiss. But they don't require a swipe. The lightest touch will do.
This is my biggest peeve with this phone.

It was on a table, and it was still ringing when I picked it up and was trying to answer it. It didn't even occur to me swipe anything. Why would it? I can't remember now what icons were on the page. I started with what (to me) looked like the most obvious one. It was green and it was at the bottom left hand corner, but I don't recall what it was an image of.
Guess I'll be spending a good part of my Saturday (ie today) on YouTube looking at S5 how-to videos.

I think this phone is going to have to be hung, drawn and quartered. And whipped. And boiled until it's had enough. And then again. And when I’ve finished I will take all the little bits and I will jump on them. Then I'm going to bury it in soft peat and recycle it as firelighters.
I was just composing a message to someone and I typed the name Ann. The bar just above the keyboard, which gives you three suggestions as you type, said:
Taylor | Arbor | Coulter

So it does.
I hardly ever look at the predictive text and I turn autocorrect off as soon as I get any phone. I don't mind it offering suggestions that I can use or ignore, but I won't abide a machine correcting what it THINKS are mistakes.

I Don't mind the suggestions too much, it seems to be learning the most likely based on previous texts,
BUT
Auto correct must die, and preferably a nasty fiery death to whoever decided to make it default to on

I like it because it doesn't correct the mistakes (which often aren't) if you either hit one of the suggestions (because it's what you want) or hit the check mark. Then it adds that word to the dictionary and will suggest it in the future. It makes composing messages a whole lot faster. I'm sure there's probably a British English dictionary I could get for it but I'm keeping all apps to an absolute minimum. Only two so far: Firefox (which is a necessity, not an app) and the Cap Metro app so I can look up when the next bus is due at a particular stop.

I still highly recommend Lookout Mobile Security. Besides anti-malware protection, it can also help you retrieve a lost or stolen phone and protect/back up your data on it.

You might open the app to register it and set it up.
It will need an email address. With that it can send you pictures of anyone that tries to unlock your phone three times and fails. (Good way to get drunk selfies. )

This phone will *not* be taking any selfies

We have a new clocking in system at work. It's 'in the cloud'
Now, aside from the fact that this is simply another chance for someone to make off with several bits of personal information I'd rather they didn't have, and aside from the fact that it's COMPLETELY BLOODY UNNECESSARY to have anything more than a punchcard to clock in and out with, there's an app for that
I figured today I've make it the third one I'd add to my phone (after Firefox and the Cap Metro one... for all the good *that* does me), because firing up the laptop, logging in and clocking out is a pain in the fundament when I know I only have a few minutes to make the bus. If I can do it from my phone while I'm walking to the bus stop I can still make that bus.
I figured... until I got to the part where a popup window from the Google Playstore told me this app wants access to my camera, my microphone, my contacts and Bob knows what else.
On your bike, app. You're only for clocking in and out of my job. You don't get all those. That's why we can't have nice things.
