Paxman's Beard. I saw them supporting Wishbone Ash at the Dagenham Roundhouse in '72. Naturally there was the obligatory 15-minute drum solo, as any prog band worth its salt should provide, and a pretty decent bass solo too as I recall. I may still have a copy their self-titled concept album, Dark Side of the Fragile Land of Bedside Manners at an Exhibition of The Rings (part one).

I think they split up soon afterwards and two of them ended up in a failed punk band called Whoosh Bang Ooh Nasty.

I never heard them live. But I've been hearing a lot about them during the course of the last day or so. Have they reformed recently? Whatever happened to their bassist, Jimmy Ocelot, wasn't it?

He had rich parents who got him into a rehab clinic. Last I heard he was running a fish and chip shop in Blandford Forum.

Yeah well, they all end up in Blandford Forum don't they ? Didn't he try to weld a Moog onto a saxophone, then burnt his fingers trying to play it ?

I believe that was Morris Whistle, keyboard player for 29 Gallon Aquarium. Really messed up his style. He had to stick to writing (and welding) after that incident. Big influence on Keith Emerson.

Course it was. It's the glass ear that confused me.

A dangerous thing to have, I think you'll agree, when you're standing that close to a Marshall stack turned up to eleven. The fact that it never shattered in all those years of touring led many to speculate that it was perspex, but others knew better - toughened glass. He had a bulletproof lughole smiley - laugh
