Apparently winds in our area reached 90-100+ mph. It was likely 90+ winds that shook me awake this morning at 4:20.

Apparently there's only minor damage to the friend's car. A couple of small dings, no smashed glass. Which reminds me. Camp Mabry recorded a trace of snow on Tuesday That would be the hail.

This is always a relatively slow time of the year at work so the managers get us doing all kinds of cleaning activities. Can't have the employees standing around doing nothing and getting paid for it. It's how my dad used to describe life in the army while waiting to be deployed to France. The sergeant says "Whitewash the rocks around the flower beds". "But Sarge, we whitewashed them yesterday". "Well bleedin' well whitewash them again!".

Any road up. Me and a couple of others got the task of tidying up the yard. We were only out there for about an hour from 9am until 10.00, but it wasn't until I got home and started shaving in front of the mirror that I saw how much the sun had caught my baldy bonce. Not boiled lobster red, and it'll fade before the weekend is out, but noticeable. You have to be careful about the sun in these latitudes, even when it's relatively low in the sky.

I'm not bald, but I do have fair skin so I have a collection of wide brimmed hats and a couple I wear regularly to mitigate the number of spots my dermatologist will freeze off when I see him.

As for idle work, I can't quite recall where I heard this, possibly my father talking about navy boot camp, or possibly some movie; regardless, apparently another such task was "moving holes". First you dig a hole and when that's complete the sergeant "politely requests" it be moved 6 feet to the left or right. Rinse and repeat.

Yep, that sounds like the sort of thing my dad talked about.

I got away without a soaking yesterday by rushing my breakfast and leaving 30 minutes earlier to catch the first bus of the day instead of the second. When the weather arrived I watched it for a while from one of the loading bays at work and it didn't seem like a particularly bad storm, but on the way home I saw several tree limbs down, a power pole leaning over (cables still attached) at a very precarious angle and with traffic still passing underneath it (), and when I got home in the afternoon I found all the clock displays flashing, so my power must have gone out during the storm. It gave us about half an inch of rain. The remaining quarter inch came from some steady rain later in the day.

Yesterday, we got more than an inch of rain in the morning, along with high winds and severe lightning/thunder. I heard on the Houston NPR station that the rain would be clearing about the time I would leave my apartment to take my very scared dog downstairs and leave for work. And about the time I was getting out of the shower, I could tell the rain was slacking off significantly.... Until about the time I put my shoes on.

Needless to say, Nessie did not finish her duties before running inside my parents house and needed a second walk about 8 when the storm finally cleared.

Poor Nessie There's a marginal to slight risk of severe weather for us today, and a moderate risk of excessive rainfall. That usually happens at the end of the month (Memorial Day), not the beginning (Mayday).
